काल भैरव जयंती — The Most Sacred Day of the Bhairav Calendar
KAAL BHAIRAV JAYANTI 2026
Friday · शुक्रवार
Krishna Paksha Ashtami · मार्गशीर्ष मास
Margashirsha Month · कृष्ण पक्ष अष्टमी
The most powerful day in the entire Bhairav worship calendar
Kaal Bhairav Jayanti marks the divine moment when Lord Shiva's cosmic fury took form as Kaal Bhairav — the ultimate destroyer of ego, falsehood, and time itself.
When Brahma's fifth head spoke a lie before Shiva, the Lord's anger manifested from his third eye as a terrifying form — dark as a storm cloud, with blazing eyes and a garland of skulls. This was Kaal Bhairav. In one swift motion, he severed Brahma's lying head.
The day this manifestation occurred is celebrated as Kaal Bhairav Ashtami or Kaal Bhairav Jayanti. According to the Shiva Purana, worship on this single day is equal to 1000 days of regular worship.

Step by step — from sunrise to midnight puja
Wake up before sunrise. The very first act of Bhairav Jayanti must be feeding a dog — preferably a black dog. Offer cooked food, bread, or milk. This is the most auspicious act of the entire day. This single act feeds Bhairav himself.
Take a bath with clean water. Wear black or dark red clothes. Light a mustard oil lamp before your Bhairav murti or image. Take sankalpa — state clearly in your mind or aloud: "I am observing Kaal Bhairav Jayanti for protection, liberation, and grace." Begin fasting from this point.
Perform 1008 repetitions of the mool mantra using a Rudraksha mala:
ॐ कालभैरवाय नमः
If time permits, also recite the Kaal Bhairav Ashtakam — composed by Adi Shankaracharya. This is the most complete praise of Bhairav.
Visit the nearest Kaal Bhairav or Shiva temple at dusk. Offer mustard oil, black sesame seeds, red hibiscus flowers, and bilva leaves. If no Bhairav temple is nearby, a Shiva temple is equally valid. Light a lamp and pray for protection and liberation.
The midnight hour (11:30 PM to 12:30 AM) is the most powerful time of Kaal Bhairav Jayanti. Perform the complete 16-step pooja at this hour. Light a mustard oil lamp, offer black sesame, chant 108 times. This midnight puja is described in the Rudrayamala Tantra as the most potent Bhairav sadhana of the year.
After the midnight puja, break your fast with sattvic food — fruits, milk, or a simple meal. Share prasad with family. Feed the dogs again before sleeping. Your Jayanti observance is complete.
As described in Shiva Purana, Kashi Khanda, and Bhairav Agamas
Sincere Jayanti worship grants Bhairav's protective shield for the entire coming year — from enemies, evil spirits, accidents, black magic, and sudden misfortune.
One day of worship on Kaal Bhairav Jayanti equals 1000 days of regular worship. All accumulated negative karma from the past year is dissolved in Bhairav's fire of grace.
All deep-rooted fears — of death, enemies, failure, the unknown — are dissolved. Bhairav literally means "he who removes fear." Jayanti worship accelerates this liberation.
Those facing injustice, false accusations, or legal troubles receive Bhairav's direct intervention. The Kotwal of Kashi ensures truth prevails for those who worship him on this day.
Spiritual blocks, past-life karmic debts, and obstacles on the path to liberation are cleared. Bhairav as Kaal governs time itself — he can compress lifetimes of karma into a single night.
Feeding a dog on Bhairav Jayanti carries the highest merit of any seva. Even one act of dog seva on this day can dissolve years of accumulated negative karma.
