काल भैरव अष्टमी — Complete Date Calendar for 2026
The 8th lunar day (Ashtami) of every month is sacred to Kaal Bhairav. There are two Ashtamis every month — one in Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) and one in Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight). That means 24 opportunities every year to receive Bhairav's direct blessings.
The Krishna Paksha Ashtami is considered more powerful — it aligns with Bhairav's nature as a deity of the night, time, and dissolution. The most sacred of all is the Kaal Bhairav Jayanti — Krishna Ashtami of Margashirsha month.

Before anything else on Ashtami — feed a dog. This is the non-negotiable first act. A black dog is most auspicious. Even bread or a biscuit counts. This is direct seva to Bhairav.
Light a sarson tel (mustard oil) lamp before sunrise or at dusk. Keep it burning throughout your puja. This is Bhairav's preferred light — it purifies the space and invites his presence.
Chant ॐ कालभैरवाय नमः 108 times on your Rudraksha mala. On Krishna Ashtami, chant at midnight for maximum power. On Shukla Ashtami, chant at sunrise or dusk.
Offer: black sesame seeds (kala til), bilva leaves (smooth side facing murti), red hibiscus flowers, and urad dal. These are Bhairav's sacred items — each has specific significance.
Observe a fast on Krishna Ashtami — full day or until after puja. Break with sattvic food (no onion, garlic, or non-veg). Even a partial fast with fruits is acceptable.
Feed dogs again at dusk. On Ashtami, every dog you feed is a direct offering to Bhairav. The more stray dogs you feed, the more Bhairav's grace flows to you and your family.
